ABOUT

KEISUKE SUGAWARA
Supported by
Keisuke Sugawara is a choreographer based in Berlin whose practice explores perception through the body and the spatial relationships that emerge between individuals, environments, and society.
His work centers on questions of selfhood and relationships with others, developed through experimental choreographic methodologies, including the use of visual scores. By focusing on differences in perception and bodily experience shaped by cultural and social frameworks, he investigates diverse ways of sensing, thinking, and relating to the world.
Working across performance, installation, sound, light, and visual media, he creates environments that encourage reflection and embodied experiences for audiences.
Since relocating to Germany in 2017, he has presented performances and research projects throughout Europe and Japan. His work has been supported by international cultural institutions including the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Danish Jutland Art Foundation, the Estonian Cultural Endowment, and the European Capital of Culture programme.
In recent years, his projects have focused on universal themes such as emotion, personal transformation, and the relationship between individuals and society.
Additional Practice
Alongside his artistic practice, Sugawara works as a facilitator, curator, and programme advisor.
His recent activities include facilitating the Internship Programme “Project Development Course” at AXUS (since 2025) and contributing as a curator and programme advisor for ЯeSpiration (2023) and Synchronicity (2025), organised by qutori Inc.
